🐝 How Much Does It Sting? The Pain Scale
The Schmidt sting pain index (0 to 4) for 21 stinging insects, supplemented by 9 venomous marine animals and arachnids: pain, duration, actual severity, and the field response that changes everything.
★ Pain and danger are two different scales: the bullet ant scores 4/4 in pain but 3/5 in severity, while the box jellyfish is almost the opposite with 4/4 pain and a deadly 5/5.
★ Venom from weeverfish, stingrays, and jellyfish is heat-labile: 45°C hot water breaks it down and provides relief within minutes, whereas cold packs only worsen the pain.
★ The tarantula hawk wasp delivers the most intense pain on the Schmidt index, but it lasts only 5 minutes — compared to 12 to 24 hours for the bullet ant.
★ The stonefish is considered the most venomous fish in the world: its sting can remain unbearable for several hours without treatment.
★ On a Portuguese man o' war, fresh water and vinegar worsen venom discharge from nematocysts: only hot seawater and tweezers should be used.
Pain : 0 = painless, 4 = maximum (bullet ant, tarantula hawk) — higher is better.
