  1. pairs of thorns at the base of the leaves, one straight and one curved
  2. oval leaves with three main veins starting from the base
  3. small round yellow-orange fruits, thin flesh surrounding a hard stone
Sizejusqu'à 10 m
Floweringsummer, fruit in autumn-winter
Habitatdeserts and semi-deserts of Western Asia, North-East Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula, especially along wadis where groundwater remains accessible

⚠️ Not to be confused with

No known dangerous confusionaucun

To tell them apart: the pair of thorns at the base of each leaf (one straight, one curved) and the three main veins starting from the base of the leaf clearly identify the jujube among desert thorny shrubs

Wild Jujube (Sahelian apple) (Ziziphus mauritiana)aucun (les deux sont comestibles et du même genre)

To tell them apart: Ziziphus spina-christi, more typical of strict desert and Saharan areas, carries longer and sturdier thorns and often a smaller fruit; Ziziphus mauritiana, more common in the Sahelian savanna and up to Asia, has shorter paired thorns and a generally larger, sweeter fruit

Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis)aucun pour le jujubier ; le jojoba n'est pas dangereux non plus mais sa graine crue est déconseillée en alimentation

To tell them apart: the confusion between jojoba and jujube is purely nominal: botanically, the two plants have no link — the jujube tree produces a real sweet fleshy fruit on a thorny shrub with pairs of thorns at the base of the leaves, whereas the jojoba seed grows alone in an acorn-shaped dry capsule on a shrub with waxy, thornless leaves
