🍄 Brown roll-rim
Paxillus involutus · Paxillaceae

🔍 Identify it without mistakes
An olive-brown mushroom once consumed massively in Central and Eastern Europe after cooking, now reclassified as potentially lethal: it is not a classic toxin that kills, but an autoimmune mechanism. Repeated ingestions eventually sensitize the immune system of certain individuals, who then develop a severe and sometimes fatal reaction, even after a meal that had never caused any problems before.
- olive-brown to reddish-brown cap, inrolled margin towards the inside (the distinctive feature that gives it its name), velvety surface becoming slimy in wet weather
- decurrent gills (running down the stem), yellowish, turning brown when touched or cut
- short stem, same color as the cap
- grows in association with many trees (birch, conifers, broadleaf trees)
⚠️ Not to be confused with
To tell them apart: the brown roll-rim itself must no longer be consumed, regardless of the number of previous incident-free meals: immune sensitization can occur at any time after years of apparently risk-free consumption
☠️ What kills
First steps : Seek emergency medical help in case of extreme fatigue, paleness, or dark urine after a meal of mushrooms, even for someone who has previously eaten them without issue. Call poison control. Permanently stop all consumption of brown roll-rim, regardless of past apparent tolerance.
