London Plane — Platanus x hispanica

🔍 Identify it without mistakes

Bark peeling off in large polychrome plates (cream, green, grey, brown) — a unique "puzzle" pattern among European trees. Large palmate leaves with 3-5 pointed lobes, resembling maple leaves but much larger. Spherical fruiting heads ("balls") hanging from a long stalk, one or two per stem depending on the species.

  2. large palmate leaves with 3-5 pointed lobes, larger than maple leaves
  3. spherical fruiting heads ("balls") hanging from a long stalk
  4. often massive trunk, majestic silhouette in urban alignments or riverbanks
Size30-40 m
FloweringApril-May
Habitatriverbanks in the wild state for the American species, very widely planted in urban alignments and along roads in Europe

⚠️ Not to be confused with

Sycamore Maple (Acer pseudoplatanus)aucun

To tell them apart: the plane tree's bark peels off in very characteristic large polychrome plates, while sycamore bark remains more uniformly grey; plane tree leaves are alternate, sycamore leaves are opposite

🪓 Other bushcraft uses

  • fire starter: the bark that sheds naturally in large, dry, fibrous plates ignites easily, even after recent rain because the outer plates protect the inside
  • cabinetry: hard wood with a flecked grain ("lacewood" in marquetry), used for furniture and decorative veneers
  • thermal shade: large, dense foliage offering wide, cool shade — plane trees were historically planted along French roads for this reason
  • respiratory caution: fine, irritating hairs on young leaves and decaying fruit heads ("plane balls") can cause coughing and irritation if you breathe in the dust in autumn — worth knowing before using them as bedding or tinder
  • deep soil indicator: powerful spreading roots signalling deep, well-drained soil near a waterway
  • ground insulation: large leaves falling in autumn make good mulching/insulation for an improvised shelter, decomposing slowly in a thick layer
