🍄 Giant puffball
Calvatia gigantea · Agaricaceae

🔍 Identify it without mistakes
Spectacular mushroom, a white ball that can exceed the size of a soccer ball, fully edible as long as its internal flesh remains pure white and uniform. The universal safety rule — slice it in half before cooking — is non-negotiable here: this step rules out any confusion with the "egg" stage of a deadly amanita.
- spherical to ovoid shape, smooth to finely granular, white then cream then brownish at maturity
- NO stem, gills, or distinct pores at the edible stage: the interior is a solid, uniform flesh
- size reaching 20 to 50 cm in diameter, sometimes over a meter, weighing several kilos
- internal flesh of pure, uniform white from center to edge at the edible stage (like a firm fresh cheese)
- at maturity, the flesh turns yellow then brown, turning into a brown spore powder (inedible at this stage)
- grows on the ground in meadows, forest edges, and clearings, never attached to wood
⚠️ Not to be confused with
To tell them apart: ALWAYS SLICE IN HALF, top to bottom, any white ball you harvest before cooking: a young puffball reveals a white, uniform flesh from center to surface; an amanita "egg" reveals a visible outline of a cap, gills, and stem forming inside the universal veil (the miniature mushroom is visible in cross-section) — if you have any doubt about this cross-section, never consume it
🍽️ Eating it
Preparation : always cooked, sliced and pan-fried like a cutlet; never consume if the flesh has started to turn yellow or if internal structures (future cap, gills) are visible when cut; consume quickly after harvesting, as the flesh spoils fast
